Selecting the sewing needle best for your fabric depends on the needle size. Generally, the smaller the needle, the lighter the fabric weight. There are exceptions like fabric type and pile. Below are a few tips for selecting the appropriate needle.

First, determine if your fabric is a knit/ stretch or woven fabric. If it is knit and stretches use a ballpoint needle. Ball point needles are rounded at the point, to prevent rupturing the weave of the fabric. These needles are made for stretch materials.

Second, consider the weight of the fabric. Is it light or heavy? Does it drape well and move freely? If it is light you will use a smaller needle. Smaller needles usually range size 60/8  through 80/12. Sizes 11 and 12 are considered universal. This size can be used for a variety of fabrics, even for medium-weight stretch fabrics. Heavy-duty fabrics require needle sizes larger than 16. For upholstery fabrics like canvas, duck, denim, or corduroy try a 110/18 needle.

Note, that there is an American sizing standard and a European sizing scale for sewing needles. Sizes are listed on the packaging with European first. A slash separates the European size from the American size. European sizes range from 60  to 120. American sizes range from 8 to 18. This sizing scale varies from brand to brand.

Popular sewing needle brands are Schmetz, Dritz, Organ, and Singer. Commercial home sewing machines typically have their brand of sewing needles.
